1878 Map of Brown County

2009 Reprint of 1878 Original.

The 1878 map of Brown County portrays an interesting vestige of the colonial French presence in what is now Wisconsin. The very long and narrow parcels of land running perpendicular to the lower course of the Fox River result from the French long-lot or seigniorial system of land subdivision employed in the New World. Adjacent to these are the one-mile square sections of land so characteristic of the United States Rectangular Survey, or the township and range system as it is more commonly known, employed by the U.S. government in subdividing land as called for in the Land Ordinance of 1785.

Fine art quality lithographic reproduction, from Peninsula Partners Publishing.

Watermark does not appear on print.
