The History of Door County: The County Beautiful with a new introduction by Kubet Luchterhand.

Holand's History of Door County is an important benchmark in northeasten Wisconsin History. By interviewing oldtimers and gleaning through newspapers that served the county, Holand compiled a fasinating account both of the region's past and of what the people believed about it. The area had changed a good deal between the first European settlements and 1917, when these books first appeared, and it changed even more in the 75 years since 1917. Without Holand's work, we might still be able to document the events he writes about, but we could never capture the perspective and flavor of his account. Holand's work froze and recorded the history of the region up to 1917 and thus became a starting point for all subsequent study of the peninsula.
