Can anyone who has visited Door County forget Wilson's in Ephraim? We think not. The establishment with its white facade, wrap-around sign and striped awnings is surely one of the most memorable places imaginable. And it's safe to say that few who have stopped there can forget the pleasure of its ice cream cones with the inevitable jelly bean at the bottom. Wilson's isn't only a historic landmark; it's a pleasure palace.
Meredith Ammons captures these features and so much more in her enjoyable book, The Scoop. In a section on the ice cream parlor's series of owners, dating back to Oscar and Mattie Wilson who established it in 1906, Ammons offers us insights into the aspirations of the people who bought and managed Wilsons. She even brings us up to date because some of the former owners are still living. All of them seem to have had two major goals in common: making Wilsons a successful restaurant and ice cream parlor and preserving its venerable traditions. Ammons book proves every one of them achieved their goals.
