Almost as soon as the cannonballs began fllying over Fort Sumter, Edwin Quiner systematically began collecting accounts of the great national cataclysm. Quiner was in a unique position to do so. A Madison journalist and printer with an interest in history, he had already been published in the Wisconsin Historical Collections.
