Lighthouses and Range Lights of Door County, Wisconsin.
The Door Peninsula of Wisconsin juts northeastward between the waters of Green Bay and those of Lake Michigan. It has more than 250 miles of shoreline and at least it's fair share of rocky shoals, dangerous passages, and difficult harbors. In the nineteenth century, it also had a wealth of timber and stone resources that gave rise to a brisk maritime trade, and the combination of maritime traffic and dangerous waters created a pressing need for lighthouses. By 1900, Door County had more lighthouses than any other county in the United States.
