In the very beginning of The Park, Aulabaugh wisely tells us that ?The Park? means Peninsula State Park because he uses this nickname repeatedly. Aulabaugh then presents a brief geologic review of the county and a concise historical summary. There is just enough material in these chapters to refresh the memory of informed readers and educate those who possess only a superficial knowledge. In presenting this information, to his credit, Aulabaugh shows he knows how to tell what is significant without digressing beyond the average reader?s level of interest. Readers will appreciate that, and will soon learn he has given them more than a general background, as important as that is. He has also constructed a personal framework within which he is able to place the many persons and events he remembers from camping in ?The Park? every year except four since 1950!
